Description
The first Estonian university, established in 1632 by King of Sweden, Gustav II Adolf, is situated in Tartu. The magnificent main edifice of the University of Tartu with its mighty pillars was built between 1805–1809. Similarly to the Republic of Estonia, the University of Tartu has had to face and stand up to various periods of occupation. The university has even been closed down for some time, but has managed, however, to retain its position as the mecca of Estonian education. Alma mater Tartuensis has numerous traditions and definitely an interesting history. As one of the oldest universities in northern and eastern Europe the University of Tartu has always been and still is recognized as the leader in the higher education in Estonia.
