The fifth volume of the Studia Orientalia, Series Nova contains a survey of the scholarly work of Linnart Mäll (1938–2010), the founder of Buddhist and Oriental Studies in the University of Tartu, by Märt Läänemets – Linnart Mäll’s Contribution to Mahāyāna Studies –; and Linnart Mäll’s own last four papers from the years 2005–2009: Worship of Written Scriptures as a Basis for the Development of Mahāyāna; Quotations from Mahāyāna Sūtras in the Works of Thinkers of Nālandā; Perspectives of Buddhism in the European Union and Especially in Estonia; Tibetan Translations of the Mahāyāna Sūtras and Their Role in World Culture.
In third part three articles by the students of Linnart Mäll are published: Towards a Theory of ‘Awakening Conduct’ (Reflections on the Gaṇḍavyūha-sūtra) by Märt Läänemets; Some Remarks on the Bodhisattva in the Lotus Sūtra by Teet Toome; and On the Possible Connections between the Evolution of Mahāyāna Buddhism and the Development of the Canon of Buddhist Iconic Art by Leho Rubis.
